The latest addition to the Hanse 460 fleet in Australia has arrived in Sydney and is being commissioned at Windcraft’s Bayview office.
Sydney possesses the largest and the most beautiful natural harbour on the planet and is a top tier yachting venue and destination. There are few better ways to take-in all the Harbour has to offer than on the Hanse 460.
For sailing yachts, the cockpit is where you will spend the majority of your time and here the 460 excels. Its cockpit is a huge outdoor multi-function space for relaxing and entertaining with twin tables that lower to form sun lounges. Hull #203 has a large fridge drawer handily located to port, while the electric-powered swim platform is perfect for lazing on after a dip, to launch a SUP or kayak, board the dinghy, or step onto a dock. Retractable dinghy davits will hold the tender underway but stay completely recessed and out of the way at other times.
A dozen award-winning Hanse 460s have been purchased by sailors in Australia and New Zealand who appreciate all the outstanding features and amenities offered by the 2022 European Yacht of the Year Winner. The 460 has been a critical and commercial success for Hanse with over 250 hulls sold. Reviews acknowledge the big cruiser’s enviable luxury lifestyle elements; “this boat exudes style with a capital S”.
The 460’s angular lines with reverse bow and rounded chine aft give it a distinctive presence. The Signal White colour of the latest Sydney-based 460 is nicely complemented by the synthetic teak in the cockpit, and on the helm seats that provides a warm natural feel without the maintenance and weight of real teak.
At 14.6 metres (nearly 48 feet) and with a beam of 4.79m or 15 feet 9 inches the 460 is a big boat but it’s easily handled thanks to Hanse’s well-established core values of safe cruising and sailing for a couple or short-handed. Hull #203 is a very well speccd three cabin/two head version with nav table and utility room that houses a washer/dryer and extra freezer.
New Owners Steve and Mary are experienced sailors and plan to cruise to favourite spots around the Harbour, but also to point the bow north to the sapphire tropical waters of the Great Barrier Reef, including Hamilton Island.
“I love sailing,” Steve tells Windshift as the 460 is being readied for the delivery from Sydney to Pitwatter. “Getting somewhere, going somewhere, planning it – the whole thing,” he sums-up. “I still use paper charts to work-out the daily legs and any bolt holes should that be necessary. I enjoy that aspect of it,” he admits.
Features such as the 460’s versatile twin-forestay sail plan will grant easy miles under the big reacher, as well as the ability to reef quickly and easily thanks to an in-mast furler. The 460’s voluminous interior, comparable to a 50-footer, including very generous cabin dimensions ensures a template for a highly enviable bluewater luxury sailing experience.
The Berret-Racoupeau hull design has full forward sections which, combined with the broad stern, generous freeboard and ample beam, give the Hanse 460 enormous interior volume. The saloon, with an ample headroom of more than 1.96 metres (6 ft 5 inches), creates according to David Harding in his review for Yachting Monthly “a thoroughly pleasant and remarkably light environment.”
