Award-winning Hanse 460 showcases the cruising lifestyle at SCIBS
At 15.3 meters LOA with a beam of 4.79 meters, the Hanse 460 will be one of the largest monohull sailing yachts at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show and represents a step-change in technology, innovation, and space in the family cruiser category of yachts.
From the drawing board of French naval architects Berret-Racoupeau, the Hanse 460 has attracted a swag of international awards, including a coveted European Yacht of the Year 2022 in the Family Cruiser category. The international jury of experts praised the 460’s “attractive aesthetics, enjoyable sailing and the feeling of an even bigger yacht”, and recognised “thanks to the radical hull shape, this voluminous yacht sails amazingly well”.
SAIL magazine, the highly respected U.S. publication rated the 460 easily among its Top 10 Boats of 2023 noting the design represented “a step up in performance and accommodations among production boats in its class”. The Hanse 460’s inherent easy sailing characteristics, a core Hanse feature, were also recognised at the British Yachting Awards where the German made yacht won the title of “Cruising Yacht of the Year 2022”.
Around 250 Hanse 460s have gone to marinas from Brisbane to Copenhagen, making the big, beamy cruiser a sail-away success. That’s probably due to its combination of space (the Hanse 460 is favourably compared to some 50-foot yachts), and ease of handling as the 460 is set up to be sailed short-handed by just a few crew or a couple.
In fact, two 460s are based in Queensland waters, one of which has cruised extensively, including sojourns north to the Whitsundays and south to Port Stephens. The Owner reports his Hanse 460 has exceeded their expectations and believes their decision to tick nearly all the option boxes was the right one.
“We are very happy with the fridge configuration; one for drinks, one for frozen meals and one for fresh,” he says. “When travelling north or south, we manage to sail for weeks at a time never needing to go into a harbour to get supplies. The water maker allows this. We also have a gen set which ensures our ability to keep batteries at full charge, as this has proved to be able to charge them to 50 per cent within three hours. The washing machine is the least used item on board but allows us to explore while the washing is being done when in harbour. Similarly, we are very happy with the utility room as a great place for all the little extras,” he adds.
Yachting Monthly’s David Harding in his comprehensive review of the Hanse 460 summed it up this way: “Easy sailing, good performance, nice accommodation…. loads of space….very hard to fault on the basis of what it was designed to achieve.”

The Hanse 460’s versatility also extends to the yacht’s elegant interior with a dozen layout combinations that give you every opportunity to configure the Hanse 460 to suit their families’ needs.
Versions range from a standard three-cabin, two-head ‘Classic’ layout with nav table to cater for long-distance cruising in absolute comfort, to a five-cabin three-head version that will appeal to sail charter and training operators and is capable of sleeping 10 in private, generous accommodations.
The Hanse 460 on display at Sanctuary Cove is a stylish three-cabin two-bathroom layout that boasts an expansive master suite located in the bow featuring a double island bed and ensuite bathroom with separate shower stall. In the saloon the large galley is to starboard opposite the comfortable dining area with bar.
The second head with a separate shower stall and dayhead door is to port and right next to the roomy aft VIP cabin with its queen bed. To starboard is the guest cabin, with a double berth and storage space, with the utility room just forward.
The 460’s interior fit and finish have been described as “classy” and “a step above” most production offerings. This Hanse 460 combines French Oak furniture with Acacia floorboards to create a relaxed, sophisticated interior feel.
Once at a secluded anchorage the 460 seamlessly switches to entertaining mode thanks to its spacious cockpit with twin tables that can covert to sun beds or host a soiree with drinks from the wet bar, accompanied by barbecue appetisers. Guests and crew can relax and soak-up the sun on the large electrically lowerable swim platform. Telescopic dinghy davits can disappear into the cockpit floor when not in use.
Under sail, the 460’s wide 4.79 metre beam confers excellent form stability. Chinese, along with a marked flare above the waterline aft, are optimised to reduce wetted surface area when the boat is not heeling much. This dramatically improves performance in light airs.
A self-tacking jib and lines leading aft to the twin helms mean the big cruiser can be easily handled by a couple or even solo.
Generous sail areas of 114 sqm upwind and 234 sqm downwind promise a good turn of speed in either twilight ‘around the cans’ racing or tweaked in full regatta mode. This 460 is fitted with a shallow 1.75 metre keel, a must for sailing in Moreton Bay, but a deeper 2.25m option is available.
The Hanse 460 has made a big impression wherever it has been exhibited, as sailors appreciate its powerful, highly efficient hull shape, superior build quality, and interior finishes.
With the ability to sleep up to eight people in comfort and sit on 8 -10 knots in the right conditions, the Hanse 460 provides a couple or a family with the best way of slaking
their thirst for adventure, with good company, in enviable luxury.
Windcraft is looking forward to hosting yachting enthusiasts coming to our stand on the “F” arm of the Marina at the Show.
