Fjord 39 XL wins high marks from reviewers as a top-tier boat
The Fjord 39 XL excels in every category.
That’s the distilled verdict from UK based Adventure Boating Magazine POWERBOAT & RIB which recently completed a comprehensive test of Fjord’s new entrant into the highly competitive and crowded 35 – 40 foot day boat category.
The PBR Team came away impressed by the Fjord 39 XL’s performance, living space and robust design: “More than just a day boat, the new 39 XL is an exciting multi-tasker…”
Launched at the Cannes Yachting Festival back in September the 39 XL fully shares Fjord’s iconic design ethos of fast, versatile, open deck plan boats that also combine a luxurious high-quality fit-out, signature distinctive looks, first-class engineering and sea-going ability.
The POWERBOAT & RIB article notes the Fjord 39 XL’s deck layout makes best possible use of the boat’s wide beam: “It is a boat that belies its size – down to its 3.86 metre beam and the fact that every square inch of deck space, right up to its vertical stem is put to use.”

Its highly appealing Med-style aesthetics aside, the Fjord 39 XL has plenty to recommend it to Australians and New Zealanders who have to contend with some of the most challenging seas on the planet.
Hull: The newly developed and hydrodynamically optimised high-performance sandwich hull with its robust inner frame ensures great stability. The PRB review recognised the quality of the 39 XL’s hull underpinnings: “The hull has a super-solid feel to it, as running through the confused sea of the day at 35 to 40 knots, the Fjord was completely composed, with not a single creak or groan”.
T-Top: The entire cockpit is shaded by the largest T-top in this class. The robust roof pillars are integrated into the side wall for maximum stability and freedom of movement. Safe access to the bow is via the wide and deep side decks, a long-standing Fjord feature.
Volvo Penta Engines D4 (320 hp each), option 2x Volvo Penta D6 (440 hp each): Coupled with DPI stern drives deliver serious amounts of low-down torque, which gets the 39 XL up onto the plane easily, while the Trim Assist keeps her sharp hull forefoot down when crossing wakes or chop.
Interior: 1.95 metres or 6ft 5” of standing headroom in the bow cabin and heads create a feeling of spaciousness lacking on many dayboats of this size. There’s a generous double bed with a decent hanging locker and built-in cupboards for storage.
Further options such as the full-height windscreen, and a bespoke full canvas enclosure would give the Fjord 39 XL an all-weather usability, especially in colder southern latitudes.
