Ryck 280 #282 is due in Sydney by the end of April and it’s an absolute top-of-the-line version of the German built award-winning sports day boat, packed with a long list of extras.
From the unique tactile feel of real teak on the cockpit and side decks to the upgraded helm seats and cockpit lounge with special trim and branding, this Ryck will make a fast, distinctive statement on the water, then seamlessly switch modes to a stylish entertainer able to host a swish outdoor soirée.
Two cockpit fridges mean a chilled drink is within easy reach while relaxing around the cockpit table that can host six people. A wet bar with sink, two-burner gas stove provides an al fresco dining experience, complete with panoramic water views.
The large T-Top with extra shade awnings ensures all of Ryck’s three comfortable deck seating areas are shielded from the harsh effects of the sun. Wide walk-around decks with an elevated guard rail connect the bow lounge with the generous cockpit. Rinse off after a swim, then take in the sunset from the L-shaped lounge with reversible backrests.
Down below warm natural tones of solid walnut floor and oak furniture create a cosy, welcoming bow cabin. The roomy double berth boasts more than adequate comfort for an overnight stay or a weekend away, a rarity in this size and category of boat.
A separate compartment with an electric toilet is a nicely finished vanity, along with a skylight for light and ventilation, further adding to Ryck’s legitimate weekender credentials.
This Ryck is equipped with the most powerful Mercury powerplant so far teamed with the powerful Bill Dixon-designed twin-cushion hull. The 5.7-litre Verado V10 pumps out 350 hp, an extra 50 hp on earlier models but delivers a significant performance boost for a number of reasons.
The new engine swings a much bigger prop that’s 35 percent larger than the one used on the supercharged I6. The new prop helps with low-speed control and provides more bite to improve hole shot performance.
As well, Mercury claims the Verado V10 is the quietest and smoothest in its class and that these motors run 45 percent quieter than their closest competitor when driven at cruising speed, it also weighs less than its rivals.
More desirable extras such as a bow thruster, an upgraded battery system, and Simrad chartplotter, Sona,r, and Triducer ensure this Ryck is more than adequately equipped for whatever outing or getaway its Sydney Owners decide on.
With the throttle opened up the Ryck promises an exhilarating 40-plus knot ride, while according to Motor Boat & Yachting also instilling confidence in relatively novice boaties:
The (Ryck’s) hull’s behaviour is impeccable. It lifts fairly flat onto the plane, rides high and free-revving and then heels gamely into a turn whenever you put the wheel over – digging in, pivoting about the midpoint and doing a great job of preserving and momentum until you level it back up.
It feels novice-friendly too. When you’re creeping along at displacement speeds, the directional tracking is rock solid, without the need to make fussy little corrections and over-corrections at the wheel. And when you increase the speed to between 25 – 35 knots it feels every bit as dependable.
Motorboat & Yachting summed up the Ryck 280 during their extensive on-water test this way:
It does a tremendous number of really good things very well. For a start it’s indisputably beautiful to look at. It’s also fantastically custom friendly. Whatever the boating application you have in mind, you can match this platform to it. It’s also fun to drive and secure for your family.

When hull #282 is unloaded at Port Kembla, it will mean there are now Rycks on the water in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth.
Given the Ryck’s 40-knot capability, draft of 0.91 meters with motor down and just 0.53m with it up, good sea-handling, quality appointments, safe walk-around decks, and genuine weekender credentials, it would appear to be a perfect fit for enjoying the best aspects of our outdoor boating lifestyle.
