The Hanse 348 is widely recognised as representing very good value for family sailing, offering lots of space for a boat its size, as well as being a competent coastal cruiser. Its L-shaped keel, tall fractional rig and long waterline length of 9.5 metres compared to 10.4 metres overall translates to a fast boat easily handled thanks to Hanse’s signature self-tacking jib.
The standard layout is a large Owners cabin in the bow with an aft guest cabin to starboard, and at two metres there’s plenty of room to stretch out. To port there’s a head with separate shower. Further aft is access to the deep cockpit locker useful for storing sails, fenders and a deflated dinghy. In the three-cabin version of the 348 there are twin aft cabins and a smaller heads.
The fact that Hanse has produced over 300 of the 348 model is testament to its success as a well-thought out mid-sized cruising yacht that is fun and enjoyable to sail while cruising in safety and comfort.
With an LOA of 11.4 metres the Hanse 388 is one full metre longer than its smaller sibling and that translates to extra room in the cockpit and cabins. Standard layout is two large cabins with a utility/storage space aft to port. A three-cabin version with an ensuite for the Owners cabin is also offered.
Both the self-tacking jib and the mainsail can be controlled from the helm and if you are cruising once the sails are set the crew can sit back and relax on the cockpit lounges.
As for the 388’s sailing ability Yachting Monthly had this verdict: “The 388 was a lovely boat to sail, with a feel on the helm usually reserved for more expensive yachts. The Jefa steering was light and responsive with excellent feedback.”
Hanse 418
Hanse’s 418 model has been the best-seller in the 8-Series range, a fun family yacht that’s easy to sail but also spacious and very capable of extended blue water cruising.
There’s a choice between a two and three-cabin version, the two cabin offers a huge under cockpit storage locker with access from downstairs or the cockpit and is ideal as a wet space, or dinghy, tool or toy storage, a big bonus on longer trips or passages. The two-cabin layout also gains more galley space.
The Owner’s cabin with its large island berth and luxurious touches, plus the option of en-suite, particularly appeals to families.
Sails Magazine praised the 418 as “competent, self-assured and a delight to steer”, while Cruising World found it displayed “a fine balance with sharp modern style and spirited sailing performance”.
Hanse 458
Described as a “seriously voluminous yacht”, one of the most desirable features of the Hanse 458 is the Owner’s cabin with its extremely generous double berth (1.63 metres wide) and separate shower and heads compartments.
Standard layout is the Owner’s version with cabin in the bow, two large double cabins aft and a bathroom to port in the saloon. Dividing the Owner’s cabin creates two cabins forward and two aft with two bathrooms.
Reviewers praised the feeling of space and amount of headroom in the 458’s saloon while Yachting Monthly found it offered “a high-quality and effortless sailing experience that makes it a pleasure to helm, even shorthanded”.
Hanse 508
A true long dist-distance blue water cruiser with up to five cabins, including the Owner’s, a king-size berth. There’s extensive choice of layouts, 18 in fact, but the constants are two very roomy aft cabin and a spacious saloon. The 508 features a linear galley to port and also offers the choice of a utility room with a washing machine in addition to four bathrooms.
The expansive cockpit can accommodate a wet bar, sink and bbq without compromising on lounging space, while three stairs moulded into the hull provide safe access from the swim platform to the cockpit. The 508 represents some of the best aspects of push-button sailing, including electric furling controls on the helm stations.
For its size the 508 is respectably fast, easy to handle, impressively roomy and offers undeniable comfort and luxury below deck.
The Hanse 588 offers a huge amount of space both on deck and below with up to five double cabins at a more affordable price than semi-custom yachts of comparable size. There’s the choice of no fewer than 72 interior variations and room for a Williams jet tender in the dinghy garage and launched with little fuss by an electric winch.
The 588 also boasts some special features; a ‘silent master cabin’, which is located away from all noise-making appliances and surrounded with acoustic insulation, plus a round stone shower in the master en-suite.
In crowning the 588 it’s Boat of the Year in Best Large Monohull 50ft and above Category, SAIL Magazine was suitably impressed: “The list of amenities goes on and on aboard this boat, which is as well-conceived as it is gorgeous.”
All these offers are based on taxes and charges applicable to local markets but represent an incredible opportunity for a fortunate few.
