Fjord forges ahead down under in 2024
Iconic European dayboat marque Fjord is gearing-up for an exciting year ahead with the first of several new models, the stunning new Fjord 39 due to roll out of the factory next month.
Available with the choice of inboard power from twin Volvo 320-hp Volvo D4 diesel sterndrives in the XL version or exhilarating 45-knot performance courtesy of two 400 hp V10 Mercury Verado outboards in the XP version, the Fjord 39 is certain to make an impression in this highly demanding and evolving market segment.
The Fjord 39 XP will premiere at the Palm Beach International Boat Show in late March 2024, while the Fjord 39 XL will be unveiled at the Palma International Boat Show a month later. Windcraft Yachts, the exclusive Fjord dealer for Australia/NZ is fielding enquiries about the new Fjord 39 and is confident at least one hull will be on the water here by December.
Australians have fully embraced the luxury dayboating ethos that usually encompasses a quick run to a beautiful beach or bay aboard a sleek smooth-riding hull that seamlessly converts to a social platform with plenty of open deck space equipped with sun-lounges, adjustable tables, fridges, bbq, a top of the line entertainment system, versatile shade awnings plus full head and comfortable berth for overnight accommodation, should the need arise.
The Fjord 39 offers all these features, borne out of an illustrious heritage. Dating back to Norway in the 1960s, Fjord has produced a string of innovative and class-leading designs, and the 39 is no exception. Fjords are immediately recognisable; a nearly vertical plumb bow, high freeboard, bold, horizontal sheer line, frameless windshield, a spacious flat deck layout and an open transom. They combine spectacular single-level boating lifestyle amenities with quality Scandinavian influenced interiors and appointments, and are engineered to deliver exceptional performance and seakeeping, whatever the conditions.
The third in a new generation of Fjord models the Fjord 39 shares many of the traits of its larger siblings the Fjord 41 and flagship Fjord 53. Its main components are:
Hull: Newly developed and hydrodynamically optimised high-performance GRP sandwich hull, first layer vinylester, with a robust inner frame that ensures superior stiffness and stability.
Deck: Helm station with up to three pilot seats is equipped with state-of-the-art control systems and displays. The Fjord 39 offers the option of two galley consoles with sink, large work surface and a choice of gas grill or gas cooker. Up to three fridges can be configured on the main deck. The seating area with two foldable and electrically lowerable tables can accommodate up to eight people. The large, electrically opening sun lounge on the aft deck offers plenty of space to relax. Below this is a large storage space, which in the Fjord 39 XP extends deep into the hull, where in the XL the engines are located due to the stern drive concept.
T-top, side-decks: The Fjord 39 comes standard in an open deck layout, but you can order a T-Top (the largest in its class) which provides the best coverage and protection from the elements, including an aft extension that can be activated with the push of a button and ensures the entire cockpit can be under shade. The robust roof pillars are integrated into the side wall for maximum stability and freedom of movement around deep walk-around side decks, a signature Fjord safety feature. The second large sun lounge on the foredeck can be reached without steps. A multifunctional ladder is integrated in both the inboard and outboard versions. It can be used either as a gangway or as convenient access to the water and can be extended and adjusted automatically.
Interior: The spacious cabin is equipped with a wide double berth. Drawers underneath and easy-to-use built-in cupboards on the port side offer plenty of storage space, which can be optionally extended by a wardrobe on the starboard side. The standard fridge on the port side provides additional options for catering for guests. To starboard is a full head with separate shower. There’s a choice of four different design styles for the interior: Classic, Polar, Elegance, and Sport.
Engines:
Fjord 39 XL: Standard 2x Volvo Penta D4 (320 hp each), option 2x Volvo Penta D6 (440 hp each)
Fjord 39 XP: 2x Mercury Verado V10 (400 hp each)
Chief designer of the Fjord 39, Patrick Banfield, whose work includes the classic Wallytender and one-off superyacht tenders for Feadship, has imbued the Fjord 39 with similar admirable aesthetic traits plus an emphasis on quietness and elegant surroundings.
Anthony Bishop Managing Director of Windcraft Yachts and the exclusive Fjord dealer for the Australia/NZ region, is looking forward to delivering the first Fjord 39 into Australia by the end of the year.
“We’ve experienced an appreciable surge in dayboating over the past few years,” he notes. “The celebrated Fjord look coupled with its multifunctional character and high-quality joinery, finishes and fabrics have attracted interest from those who appreciate performance, luxurious touches and versatility the brand is renowned for,” Bishop continues.
He agrees the 39’s undeniable appeal will ensure it graces docks from Miami to the Med but emphasises Fjord fans here and in New Zealand can secure a build slot for either a 39 XL or 39 XP if they act soon.
