Huge internal space and a host of luxury extras evoke the feeling of a compact superyacht
Hanse launched the Hanse 590 at the Cannes Yachting Festival last year. It’s the biggest of a new generation of Hanses designed by the French team of Berret/Racoupeau. Along with a marked change in styling, with inverted dreadnought bow and hard chines aft giving the boats a more angular look, Hanse focused on enhancing the quality of the boats down below, which has certainly been achieved.
As Yachting World notes, the 590 projects an unmistakable on-water presence. At 17.6 metres (57 feet 9 inches) LOA, with a beam of 5.3m (17’ 5”), the 590 is longer and wider than its popular predecessor, the Hanse 588 (LOA 17.2 metres, beam 5.2 metres). Despite all the extra volume, weight is about the same at 22.9 tonnes compared to the 588 at 22.8 tonnes.
“The new Hanse 590 feels enormous below and offers much of what you would need for bluewater cruising,” the review reports. It also notes while the new flagship is “right on the limit for an owner-operator…. Full push-button controls help make that achievable, including in-mast furling, bow and stern thrusters and electric winches. All lines and winches are also led to the two pedestals right aft.”
Meanwhile, with their typical thoroughness, the team at Germany’s Yacht magazine ran their slide ruler right over the 590 and came up with this verdict: “With the new Hanse 590 model, the Greifswald shipyard wants to set new standards in terms of living space and comfort. Under sail, it is designed to impress even in light winds.”
In its standard configuration, the Hanse 590 boasts supremely spacious accommodations; three huge double cabins, each with their own en-suite. A four-cabin version with a skipper/crew cabin in the bow and four bathrooms is offered as well as a six-cabin/four-bathroom layout that’s clearly aimed at the charter market. However, Hanse can tailor your 590 to your personal preferences, including an extra-large galley, an additional guest cabin, or a private dressing area in the owner’s suite.
The Yacht reviewers helpfully suggested the four-cabin version should offer the highest degree of usability and privacy. The generous double berth is then moved to port, out of the line of sight of the door.
In addition, the bathroom between the skipper’s and the Owner’s compartments extends across the entire width of the bow. This creates sound insulation from the anchor winch and the skipper’s cabin. This layout variant also offers a small desk to starboard. According to Hanse, this is an extra that is becoming increasingly popular.
The list of amenities and extras offered on the 590 is extensive; 12 deck hatches plus two additional sliding hatches by the companionway, optional wine cooler, microwave, dishwasher and washer-dryer, two-plate induction hob for effortless cooking, optional 300-litre fridge-freezer, with two lower drawers (150 litres) that can switch between fridge and freezer mode.
In addition, and in an acknowledgment of its superyacht aspirations, the 590 can include an inflatable ‘module’ which extends the swim platform into a beach club, a hydraulic gangway, and sunlounging foredeck complete with awning. Helm seats lift for access to the transom and to the optional wet bar between them.

Flagship Package
As befitting its status, the 590’s sense of luxury and refinement can be complemented by high-quality leather handrails, a designer table with folding table top in the saloon, superior saloon upholstery with multifunctional backrests, blinds for the hull windows, the kitchen island in slat design, coloured high-gloss fronts for the wall cabinets and upholstered headboards in the cabins.
Sustainablity
In addition to the Sustainable Performance Sails, which are primarily made from recycled fibres, the Hanse 590 can also be equipped with solar panels on the roof and the T- top as well as a fuel cell. Both serve to increase the 590’s range away from shore.
